After breakfast, a riot breaks out. At least they had the decency to wait until after everyone ate.
A group of factionless (isn't that like everyone now?) are shouting "Death to the factions!" (6.7). They smash stuff.
Edward is among them, and he's about to smash the Choosing Ceremony bowl. Tobias acts like this is akin to burning his childhood teddy bear, but he doesn't do anything to stop him.
Tobias sees Tris racing across the crowd, but Christina holds her back.
While our two main characters stand there and do nothing,an Erudite man tries to stop Edward, who thwacks him with his sledgehammer.
Now Tobias decides to intervene. He grabs Edward and knees him in the side.
During the scuffle, a gun goes off. Edward is shot and dies in the hospital on the next page.
Tobias realizes that he can never ally with Evelyn. It's all her fault for taking away everyone's choices (you know, because being forced to define yourself by one of five different traits was a really great way to live).
Even though he's kind of hating Evelyn right now, he sits next to her while she grieves for Edward. He was more like a son to her than Tobias is.
