It's the first day of school, and Margaret's ready in her new back-to-school dress and loafers with no socks—per Nancy's instruction and against her mom's advice (blisters).
Here's a shocker: Margaret's mom was right, and by the time she gets to school she's got crazy blisters… and plenty of the other girls are wearing knee socks anyway. Ugh.
School starts and it turns out that Margaret's teacher is a super nervous guy by the name of Mr. Miles J. Benedict Jr.
After introducing himself, he has the class fill out an introductory questionnaire of sorts covering their names, nicknames, likes, hates, goals, and thoughts on male teachers.
