Good vs. Evil

"She's closer to going Dark than Light. Lightning storms? Terrorizing the school?" (9.15.191)

Yeah, he's got a point. Lena hasn't exactly been summoning sunshine and rainbows.

"We can't choose, and we can't undo it once we're Claimed." (10.09[2].107)

Once you go Dark, you never go back. (This is true for chocolate, too.)

Obviously, identifying Dark forces wasn't one of my talents. (10.31.134)

Spotting evil is a little harder to do than just looking at someone. Charlie Chaplin. Hitler. Same mustache. Totally different people.

"WITHOUT DARKNESSE THERE CAN BE NO LIGHT." (12.19.12)

The Book of Moons uses some goofy spelling that makes "darkness" look like a fancy hair dye. But seriously, this quote from The Book of Moons is true. You can't have light without dark, just like you can't have tall without short or fat without thin. Or books without Shmoop.

"WHAT APPEARS DARKNESSE MAYE BE THE GREATEST LIGHT. WHAT APPEARS LIGHT MAYE BE THE GREATEST DARKNESS." (12.19.15)

Sometimes the line between good and evil isn't as defined as you'd think. How's that for deep?

"darkfire, lightdark / dark matter, what matters?" (2.4.8)

Lena's poetry shows her inner conflict between good and evil. She has no idea what she has within her—and at this point, does she even care?

"Mortals, everything is so black and white to you." (2.4.37)

This is an ironic statement coming from Macon, given that his family of Casters is Claimed to be either good or evil on their sixteenth birthday.

"It's a whole lot more fun being Dark than Light." (2.11[3].86)

"Whether you choose to feed on blood or not, you are still a Dark Creature." (2.11[3].121)

Macon's brother claims that being Good or Evil is in your very nature—it doesn't matter what kind of choices you make.

"The right thing and the easy thing are never the same." (2.12.43)

Is it always harder to do the good thing?
