Welcome back to Pirriwee Public, a.k.a. Drama Central.
It's the first day of school and Ziggy's grandparents have come up the coast to bring him to school.
All the parents are milling around, taking photos.
Jane meets Bonnie and Nathan and Skye. Bonnie is in full-blown hippie guise—paisley skirt, twine jewelry—but looks lovely. Nathan looks like a middle-age dad. Skye is a shy little mouse.
Suddenly Amabella comes up. She hands a birthday party invitation in a pink envelope to Skye.
But she does not hand one to Ziggy.
Looking around, Jane realizes that every single kid in kindergarten got a birthday party invitation…except Ziggy.
