Act I

Sophie journeys from Haiti to the U.S. to be with Martine.

Act II

Sophie takes up with Joseph and is caught out by Martine. She elopes with Joseph after Martine begins the virginity tests—and the mother and daughter don't speak again for a few years.

Act III

Sophie and Martine meet again in Haiti and begin the process of reconciliation, which is cut short by Martine's suicide.
