In the morning, Ifé leaves to pay respects at Dessalines' grave and Atie stays behind with Sophie. Sophie asks if Atie will miss Louise when she goes. The answer's pretty obvious.
Ifé returns from the cemetery with coconuts, which she shares with Sophie and Eliab (and the pig).
Ifé points out lanterns moving in the distance. She explains to Sophie that a woman must be in labor. If it's a boy, a lantern will burn in the night. If a girl, then nothing.
After a while, the lantern is extinguished—a girl has been born.
