By Ray Bradbury

Chapter 33

  • Doug has a jar of fireflies and he's writing by their light. His topics tonight: WHY YOU CAN'T DEPEND ON THINGS and WHY YOU CAN'T DEPEND ONPEOPLE.
  • A few reasons for the first: machines fall apart, sneakers get old, trolleys always get to the end of the line.
  • A few reasons for the second: they go away, and then multiple variations on "they die."
  • He concludes his writing with, THEN… I, DOUGLAS SPAULDING, SOME DAY… MUST…
  • Before he gets to the end, the fireflies turn themselves off. He sets them free, then takes his empty Mason jar to bed in the dark.
