In the truck, Frederic is pleased with how things have gone, and is grateful to the surgeon for doing such a good job on his knee. He knows it will make him "crazy" if he thinks of Catherine, because he does not know if he will see her.
He thinks about losing the ambulances and the men. He no longer feels obligated to the army.
He wonders if they will count him among the dead. He wonders about the priest and Rinaldi, but is very hungry and wants to get to the town.
