Writing Style
Conversational, Laid Back, Casual
Max tells his story as if he were having a conversation with a friend. After all, that's what Freak suggests: "Just write it all down like you're talking. Put in all the fun we had, the cool things we did" (23.41). And it comes out just like that:
So I'm hanging out down under, listening to some of my thrash tapes on the fake Walkman I got last Christmas, when Freak pops up on the side of my bed […] he's suddenly there, like whoa! (10.8)
Like whoa, indeed.
This style makes total sense when you think about Max's low-key attitude and the fact he doesn't think much of himself as a writer. He is telling the story in his way, straightforward with no pretenses.
What do you think Freak's style would have been if he were the one telling the story?
