Mayor Eli Millstone in Hope Was Here

By Joan Bauer

Mayor Eli Millstone

When Lou Ellen notices a funeral hearse parked right in front of the diner, she exclaims, "Yuck…Those things give me the creeps" (55). That's exactly what we have to say about Mayor Millstone and his horrible henchmen. A great big yuck.

Mayor Millstone is the evil force in Mulhoney and rules with an iron fist. He's the kind of guy who gives all politicians a bad name—he's a liar, a crook, and a greedy bully. Half the town is convinced that the Mayor is milking the Real Fresh Dairy by taking bribes from owner Cranston Broom. The other half suspects it as well, but is too afraid to admit it. Needless to say, the Real Fresh Dairy employs half of Mulhoney's workers.

Mulhoney comes out with guns blazing to try to take down G.T.'s campaign for mayor. He tries to attack his character, and when that doesn't work, he hires people to physically attack his supporters. When that doesn't work, he tries to ruin the diner. When that doesn't work, he rigs the election. When the fraud is discovered, he resigns but doesn't own up to what he's done. He's the poster boy for political corruption.
