Because Mama's new religion forbids celebrating holidays, they ate lasagna at Thanksgiving and won't be celebrating Christmas, which makes Toswiah/Evie sad.
It's a Sunday morning, and Mama is making Toswiah/Evie and Cameron/Anna go to the Kingdom Hall, the Jehovah's Witnesses' house of worship.
Toswiah/Evie interprets some of the beliefs of the Jehovah's Witnesses for the reader.
As she gets ready and eats breakfast, she thinks about how much nicer all their stuff was in Denver.
While the family eats breakfast, Mama and Cameron/Anna get into a spat about Mama's religion and how it doesn't explain everything that has happened to them; Mama falls back on her religion as Cameron/Anna attacks it.
While Mama quotes the Bible, Toswiah/Evie and Cameron/Anna tell her about things they need, but she says they don't really need anything new and tells them they're going to Kingdom Hall whether they like it or not.
Something of the old Mama is left, but Daddy is disappearing slowly, and he hasn't said a word this whole time.
As the three of them walk to Kingdom Hall, Toswiah/Evie begs the reader to remember who she is.
