The kid simply can't figure out how they're crashing his system when they don't have any gear. He asks them what they're on the run from, and Max asks him the same question.
He tells her that he got kicked out of MIT for not taking his medicine, but when Max asks more questions, he gets paranoid, grabs his stuff, and runs away.
Max decides that first thing tomorrow, they're going to go looking for the Institute for Higher Living. After all, it's the only real clue they have so far.
