The Poisonwood Bible Book 3, Chapter 18

By Barbara Kingsolver

Book 3, Chapter 18

  • Leah wakes up in the middle of the night surrounded by ants. "We were walking on, surrounded, enclosed, enveloped, being eaten by ants" (3.18.2).
  • She runs, but she can't find her family. She feels guilty for leaving Adah behind. Has she hurt her again?
  • Anatole appears and tells Leah he'll go back and try to find her family. All Leah can do is stand in the water, where ants drown and float, and wait.
