The Princess Bride Tough-o-Meter

By William Goldman

(3) Base Camp

William Goldman is a straightforward guy and a straightforward writer, so as far as novels go, this one is as readable as it gets. Goldman accomplishes this by writing in the way that most people would speak to you if you, say, bumped into them on the street. He'll throw in a wild metaphor or symbol now and then, so keep your eye out for those, but he'll also take time to step back and tell you that this is what he's doing. Overall, the writing makes for an easy and enjoyable read, and Goldman really isn't interested in tripping you up with difficult language.
