Grace's dad comes home with good news: he got a raise, so Grace is getting a new car!
She's excited because “a car like that means freedom” (6.17) but she also wants to spend more time with her distant parents.
That night, Grace hears the white wolf pacing around the deck. Grace actually snarls at her, and the wolf goes back into the woods.
Grace goes back to bed and falls asleep smelling of wolf: “pine needles, cold rain, earthy perfume, coarse bristles […] It was almost like he was there” (6.26).
