On the third day of their wanderings behind enemy lines, someone shoots at the four guys.
Three of them manage to duck into a ditch for cover, but Billy just stands there like an idiot. He seems to think it's the rules of fair play that he should give the marksman another chance.
Roland Weary, the antitank gunner, yells at Billy to get out of the way, "you dumb motherf***er" (2.14.3).
Billy is so shocked that he gets down off the road.
