Leah's Sons in The Red Tent

By Anita Diamant

Leah's Sons

Here they are, in order: Reuben, Simon, Levi, Judah, Zebulun, Naphtali, and Issachar.

And here's the lowdown:

Reuben is gentle, kind, and loving, but he's dishonored by the family when he has an affair with his Auntie Bilhah.

Simon and Levi are the evil ones who hatch the plan to massacre the inhabitants of Shechem. These guys have no remorse, and they ruin Jacob's family's reputation. They accuse Shalem of being a rapist and a savage without any evidence because they simply don't like King Hamor, since he provided Jacob's family with a faulty well. Basically, Simon and Levi massacre a whole people because they had to spend a few extra hours digging out a new well. But don't worry—these two demon children are eventually murdered for robbing someone in the street. Serves them right.

Judah is another kind brother whom Dinah loved.

Zebulun, Naphtali, and Issachar are pretty irrelevant throughout the whole book. Sorry, guys.
