The Red Tent Jealousy

By Anita Diamant

With all those babies being popped out left and right, there's bound to be some jealousy amongst the daughters of Laban in The Red Tent. Remember, giving birth is one of the most important things a woman could do back in the Bronze Age: not only did you become a mother, but you also gave your husband an heir. Oh, and yeah, we should probably also mention that these women are all giving birth to Jacob's children… That's right, these ladies are sharing a husband. Yeah, things can get pretty tense for these Real Housewives of Canaan.

Questions About Jealousy

  1. Does Rachel's jealousy for Leah ever subside? Why or why not?
  2. Is Jacob the cause of the sisters' jealousy? Or did this jealousy stem from something else?
  3. Is Dinah jealous of Re-nefer after she has her child?

Chew on This

Though there is a strong bond between the daughters of Laban, their constant state of jealousy hinders them from becoming a unified group of sisters.

Rachel's jealous nature toward Leah dooms their relationship and makes Dinah's childhood much harder.
