The Wanting Seed Part 2, Chapter 10

By Anthony Burgess

Part 2, Chapter 10

  • Derek receives a letter from Tristram, threatening to expose his affair with Beatrice-Joanna if Derek doesn't get him out of prison.
  • Derek decides that he'll be better off if Tristram stays exactly where he is, so he informs Police Headquarters to keep him jailed "indefinitely" (2.10.3). What is it with all these siblings getting pitted against each other?
  • That done, Derek finishes composing the speech he plans to deliver that afternoon. As Beatrice-Joanna requested, it contains the words "love" and "desire." "Love of country," he writes, "is one of the purest kinds of love. Desire for one's country's welfare is a holy desire" (2.10.3). Very smooth.
