Part 3, Section 1, Chapter 8

  • Walter goes home and helps Marian comfort Laura, who is feeling useless.
  • He also tells Marian everything that happened with Mrs. Clements.
  • He leaves Marian in charge and heads to Welmingham.
  • Walter finds Welmingham really depressing.
  • He goes to Mrs. Catherick's house and finds a woman who's pretty nuts and extremely rhymes-with-witchy.
  • She had been ostracized by the town for her supposedly promiscuous behavior—we're surprised no one tried to slap a scarlet A on her
  • She rants about everyone: her stupid kid, her jerk of a husband, the snotty people in the town whose grudging respect she's won, Walter… and of course Sir Percival: the Reigning King of Dirtbags.
  • She doesn't give Walter much in the way of answers, and then throws him out of her house.
