"Costard the Swain" is first mentioned as a potential source of amusement for the newly monkish young men. As promised, his misunderstandings and pratfalls provide a lot of laughs... as does his misuse of English. This clown role was one Shakespeare enjoyed writing and tailoring for the actors with whom he worked. He probably wrote this part for the famous clown Will Kemp.
