Jane Banks and Michael Banks (Karen Dotrice and Matthew Garber)’s Timeline and Summary
- After running away from home—actually just chasing after a kite—Jane and Michael are brought back by a constable. Their nanny quits in frustration.
- They pen an ad for a new nanny, who'll be fun and nice, but their dad tears it up and throws it in the fireplace. It blows away and somehow finds Mary Poppins.
- After Poppins arrives and gets herself hired, she impresses Jane and Michael with her magic carpetbag and measuring tape, and shows them how to magically clean up the nursery.
- They jump inside a chalk drawing on the sidewalk with Mary and Bert, which turns into an adventure in an animated world.
- Then, they journey to see Mary's Uncle Albert, who floats in the air when he laughs—and they end up laughing and floating, as well, until Mary makes them come down.
- They go to the bank with their father, where Michael holds onto his tuppence when Dawes Sr. tries to put it in a sales account, provoking a run on the bank. This gets George in hot water.
- As the kids flee the bank, they run into Bert, who ends up looking after them—but they get miraculously sucked up a chimney, forcing Mary to follow after them. (The "Step in Time" number ensues).
- Afterwards, they find out their father, George, is about to get fired.
- Fortunately, this works out well, and George wants to spend more time with them. They tearfully say goodbye to Mary—who's leaving because the wind's changed—but they're glad to have their dad back.
- They fly a kite with George and their mother, as Mary flies away with her umbrella.
