Million Dollar Baby Scene 7 Summary

Happy Birthday, Here's Some Major 'Tude

  • Maggie's at her waitress job, picking up tips. She smiles. Then we see her getting up at the crack of dawn and jogging on the beach. We're getting tired just watching her.
  • Then she buys her own speed bag. With nickels. Okay, quarters. But the point is, she got her own bag.
  • Cut to Frankie watching Big Willie fight on TV and shadowboxing from his sofa. Big Willie wins and is named the new champion of the world. Frankie doesn't look very happy.
  • Then we cut to Scrap in his room at the Hit Pit. Frankie arrives bearing cheeseburgers. Aw, they're making up.
  • Frankie and Scrap discuss Big Willie's fight, and how well he did. Then they reminisce about the past. Also? Scrap may live in a hovel, but he's got HBO.
  • Meanwhile, Maggie's practicing with her speed bag out on the main floor. Frankie's not stoked. Scrap tells him to ease up; it's her birthday.
  • When Frankie approaches Maggie, he quickly finds that she's not in the best of moods. In short, she's bummed that she's spent another year doing what she's always done, scraping dishes and scraping by, and, she can't help it, but boxing's the only thing she's ever felt good doing. Also, her family's horrible.
  • Frankie offers to help Maggie find a trainer, and she refuses. She wants to work with Frankie, and she's seen him looking at her. She knows if he trains her, she could be a champ.
  • Frankie agrees to take Maggie on, but only under the conditions that: 1) she does everything that he says, no questions asked; and 2) once he's taught her how to fight, they'll get her a manager, and then he's out of there, and he doesn't want to hear anything more about her.
  • They shake on it. Maggie's stoked. Best. Birthday. Ever.
  • Oh, and Scrap's been watching the whole exchange. Because Scrap.
  • Frankie and Maggie get right into it, and he gives her her first lesson immediately: the speed bag.
  • He also starts giving her a hard time immediately. Congratulations, Maggie. If you're on the receiving end of a hard time, you're officially part of the Hit Pit family.
