Orin Mannon Timeline and Summary

  • A wounded Orin arrives home from the war accompanied by his pal, Peter Niles. He feels strange and anxious about returning to his house now that his father's dead.
  • He seems incapable of properly mourning his father, which really upsets his sister.
  • He asks Lavinia about the letter she wrote where she mentions Brant.
  • Lavinia promises him they'll talk later, but warns him not to let Christine fool him.
  • Orin doesn't listen. Christine tells him that Lavinia is just crazy with grief and not to listen to her.
  • He tells his mom he'll forgive anything, unless she was fooling around with Brant.
  • He's getting more confused and susceptible to being controlled by his mother and sister.
  • He and Lavinia hang out with Hazel and Peter. Orin lets loose with some stuff that makes it pretty obvious he's hurting inside.
  • Even though she knows Orin is falling for Christine's lies, she tries to get through to him anyway.
  • Eventually, it works. Orin participates in a plan to murder Brant.
  • Orin confronts his mother and tells her what they've done. Christine is beside herself and commits suicide—which Orin did not expect (he's convinced that Brant worked some kind of magic on her and made her kill Ezra).
  • Orin and Lavinia come back from a long vacation. At first, Orin's afraid to even set foot in the house. Lavinia tries to convince him what they did was right.
  • They have another little chat with Hazel and Peter. Orin gets weird and says Lavinia is trying to be like Christine and that she kept flirting with strange men when they were on the Islands.
  • He's engaged to Hazel, but his mental state is going downhill fast.
  • He's more and more consumed with guilt about his mother's death.
  • Lavinia finds him in the study, writing a history of the Mannon Family—with all of the nasty stuff included. He tells her that a lot of it has to do with her.
  • They argue and he accuses her of messing around again. Lavinia says she wishes he was dead.
  • He meets with Hazel, who says she wants him to stay with her family and away from Lavinia.
  • He says he'd have to lie about it. Hazel says that's not going to happen.
  • Orin gives Hazel an envelope containing what he wrote about the family secrets. He tells her to give it to Peter if anything should happen to him.
  • Lavinia barges in and everybody argues. She says she'll do whatever Orin wants as long as Orin doesn't give Hazel the envelope.
  • Orin agrees, and tells Hazel it's over. He's too guilty for happiness.
  • He also tells Lavinia this means that she can't be with Peter and has to be only with him.
  • They argue. Orin decides to kill himself because he thinks Christine is speaking through Lavinia.
  • Peter shows up and Orin says he's got to clean his gun. He kills himself.
