Sexuality and Sexual Identity

DANNY: It's not spoiling it, Sandy. It's only making it better.

This line, after a kiss, shows the difference in Danny and Sandy's attitudes toward physically affection. Sandy resists because she wants to remain wholesome and pure. But Danny wants to show how macho he is by getting physical with Sandy.

RIZZO: She looks too pure to be pink.

Every clique gets together because they have something in common. Rizzo's comment here implies that the Pink Ladies, if they had a clubhouse, would hang a big sign on the door that says NO VIRGINS ALLOWED.

RIZZO: True love and he didn't lay a hand on ya? Sounds like a creep to me.

The women sing about romance, the men sing about physical affection. Rizzo acts as a bridge between the two. She doesn't understand how one can exist without the other.

SANDY: Well, he wasn't. He was a gentleman.

Sandy believes that a man who's sexual isn't a gentleman. Rizzo, on the other hand, believes that a man who isn't sexual isn't being real. Who do you agree with?

RIZZO: Miss Goody Two-Shoes makes me wanna barf. […] Look at me, I'm Sandra Dee. Lousy with virginity.

While it's one thing for Rizzo and Sandy to have differing views, it's unusual that Rizzo gets so worked up by Sandy's so-called purity. How Sandy acts doesn't affect Rizzo one way or the other. Why does Rizzo let it anger her so much?

SONNY: Then what are you supposed to do with them for the other 23 hours and 45 minutes of the day?

PUTZIE: Is that all it takes? Fifteen minutes?

The T-Birds are constantly talking about girls, but they have no clue how sex works.

KENICKIE: I bought it when I was in the seventh-grade.

Speaking of bad sex ed, Rizzo and Kenickie have unprotected sex after Kenickie's condom breaks. This is a Very Bad Idea. Also, if Kenickie has had the same condom for about six years, does that mean he's a virgin up until this point?

RIZZO: There are worse things I could do […] Press against them when we dance, make them think they stand a chance and then refuse to see it through. That's the thing I'd never do.

Rizzo thinks that being a "tease" is the worst thing possible, and that she needs to go all the way in order to maintain her image. But isn't that just what guys want her to think so that they end up in the backseat with her?

DANNY: I got chills. They're multiplyin'. And I'm losin' control, 'cause they power you're supplyin', it's electrifyin'!

Danny is so shocked (see: power, supplyin', electrifyin') by Sandy's sudden explosion of sexuality that he literally falls to the ground twitching. He's either really turned on, or he's trying—and failing—to do the Worm.
