Sixteen Candles Betrayal

Betrayal

SAM: I can't believe this. They f***ing forgot my birthday.

This line establishes how upset Sam is that her family forgot her birthday. And that this isn't your normal teen movie, not by 1980's standards. She talks with a foul mouth, just like real teens do.

SAM: Everything's getting s***tier. My family forgetting my birthday just makes it more vivid.

We're not sure why Sam's life sucks so much, other than the fact that she's a teenager. But her family totally forgetting about her makes things worse.

SAM: I swear to God, this has got to be a joke. Grandparents forgetting a birthday? They live for that s***.

Grandparents are supposed to get you the best presents on your birthday, not totally forget it! (Sidenote: Sam has yet to say anything without a swear word.)

MOM: Oh, can you remember to turn off the stove in twenty minutes?

SAM: I can remember lots of things.

Sam has a passive aggressive way of reminder her parents that they forgot her birthday. Why doesn't she just tell them how she really feels?

GINNY: Sam, I really don't have time for this.

SAM: Well I'm sorry. I always listen to you talk about your boyfriends.

GINNY: No, Sam, I think you're just being a little selfish and immature. […] Unbelievable. You make someone a bridesmaid and they s*** all over you.

By this point, we've seen Sam talk to everyone in her family, and they all seem to be terrible people who have no regard for Sam's feelings on her birthday. We can't imagine any other day being all the different.

CAROLINE: I told Tracy and Robin and those guys to come to your parents' house, okay? I told them not to tell anybody. God, I love it when your parents are out of town. I fantasize that I'm your wife and we're like the richest and most popular adults in town. I owe all my great weekends to you.

Okay, we'll lay off Sam's family for a minute to show another character betraying someone's trust. Caroline doesn't ask Jake for permission to have a party at his parents' house. She invites everyone, and he isn't happy about it.

THE GEEK: Jake, would I dick you? Let me put it to you this way, what happens to me if I dick you?

The Geek steps it up, telling Jake not to betray Sam by treating her wrong. Good for him. It's nice to see someone standing up for her for once.

JAKE: Yeah it matters. She's totally insensitive. Look what she did to my house. She doesn't know s*** about love. The only thing she cares about is partying. I want a serious girlfriend. Somebody I can love that's gonna love me back. Is that psycho?

Jake expresses his feelings about betraying betrayed by Caroline, and it seems like this isn't the first time this has happened. But shouldn't he be telling her to her face instead of telling the Geek?
