Although the actual subject matter of the film (read: one man's descent into alcoholism) is pretty intense, censorship standards of the 1940's prevent the film from depicting anything that would be considered shocking by modern audiences.

Don's DT-induced hallucinations are pretty raw—true—but that's child's play to a generation raised on Requiem for a Dream and Trainspotting.
