Character Analysis
Evans is Septimus' friend and an officer in the war, who died just before the war ended. His relationship with Septimus is described as that of "two dogs playing on the hearth-rug […] They had to be together, share with each other, fight with each other, quarrel with each other" (4.89). We might read this as an implication of a homosexual relationship, although it is never explicitly stated as such (and certainly wouldn't have been socially acceptable). Evans has deeply impacted Septimus’ life and Septimus was permanently traumatized by his death.
