Frey (Freyr)

  • Profile

Frey is a very powerful god in Asgard, even if he is originally a Vanir (enemies of the ruling Aesirs). He was traded along with his father and sister as a hostage in the Aesir-Vanir war. In the end, the Aesir gods were so impressed with him that they gave him Alfheim, the realm of the elves, as a little reward. He’s got the inhabitants of Middle-Earth in the palm of his hand, too: they pray to him for good crop yields, fair weather, and fertility. On top of that, Frey has the sweetest rides you’ve ever seen, both of them dwarvish-crafted. One, Skiðblaðnir, is a ship that always goes the right way, and bonus, folds up to fit inside your pocket. The other is a shiny boar, Gullinbursti, that’s big enough to ride. Frey is best known for pursuing the giantess Gerðr and pretty much forcing her to marry him. Not the most stand-up guy in the cosmos, that's for sure.

    • Spotter's Guide

Don’t expect to see Frey anytime soon. He’s in the forest of Barri right now, on his honeymoon with the giantess Gerðr. You should have seen him after he first caught sight of Gerðr – moping around like a lovesick puppy. Most of the time, though, he’s a powerful, muscular Aesir god who rides around on his giant boar. With a cape. Glorious.
