Character Role Analysis

Marie Shabata and Alexandra Bergson

Since the time she was a child, Marie has always been the object of male attention, and she never seems to lose her childhood naiveté or her ability to take joy in the little things. Marie lives freely in the moment of her desires and feelings, while Alexandra, who's practical to a fault, feels detached from her emotions. They're clearly foils for one another; we appreciate Alexandra's character all the more because we can compare her to Marie.
