Elizabeth Bates Timeline and Summary

  • Elizabeth goes outside just as the workday at the nearby mine is ending. Her father, who drives an engine for the mine, stops by to say "Hi," and bums some tea.
  • Then, Elizabeth goes about making dinner for her family. Her daughter comes home, but her husband hasn't turned up yet.
  • She decides to go ahead with dinner even though Walter isn't home yet. She's not happy, thinking that he's off boozing.
  • After the kids are in bed, she decides to go looking for him (we guess she's a bit more worried than she let on). She doesn't find him, but a neighbor offers to continue the search.
  • Her mother-in-law arrives a little bit after that, saying she's gotten word (from the neighbor) that Walter has had some kind of accident.
  • Eventually, they get word that Walter is dead, and some men bring his body home. The MIL and Elizabeth then strip, bathe, and re-clothe is body while Elizabeth contemplates the meaning of this event within her life.
