How we cite our quotes: (Chapter.Paragraph)
Quote #1
Commander Towers felt a little dazed, but refreshed. It was a long time since he had had to deal with this sort of a young woman. (1.164)
Man, Commander Towers has been out of the game longer than Larry Byrd. Knowing that, he's going to have his hands full with Moira Davidson—she parties so hard that she makes Ke$ha look like a nun. A super-glittery nun, sure, but a nun nuntheless.
Quote #2
From the back view, in that light summer dress, she was not unlike Sharon—or could it be that he was forgetting, muddling them up? (2.294)
Naturally, Dwight can't help but think about his wife as his feelings toward Moira grow. Sharon is almost assuredly dead—as is the rest of his family—but Dwight is unwilling to let her go. Once a married man, always a married man in this case.
Quote #3
"Nearly forty per cent of my ship's company have got themselves tied up with girls in Melbourne—married, some of them." (4.259)
Dwight's ship-hands are less chaste than their principled boss. We're not saying that's a bad thing, either—if you find out you've only got a year to live, hollering at every hunk and honey you see seems like a fairly normal response. And a hunky honey? Well, that's just like winning the lottery.
Quote #4
"That's just where you've been wrong," the girl said equably. "It's me that's been courting him." (5.224)
Moira knows she's fighting a losing battle for Dwight's heart, but she never stops marching forward. That's a testament to how sincere her feelings toward him are.
Quote #5
In the dark alcove he took her in his arms and kissed her. [...] "Sharon wouldn't mind me doing this. It's from us both." (5.255)
OMG, it's finally happening. Of course, Dwight just has to burst our bubble by mentioning his dead wife while kissing his new boo, but we'll take what we can get at this point. So don't mind us, we'll just be over here writing copious amounts of fan fiction.
Quote #6
In the privacy of his little curtained cabin he unlocked the safe that held the confidential books and took out the bracelet; it glowed in the synthetic light. She would love it. (6.26)
As much as Dwight loves Moira, he loves his wife Sharon just a little bit more. In fact, he loves her so much that he buys her a fancy diamond bracelet despite knowing that he'll never actually be able to give it to her. As with most things in On the Beach, this makes us want to simultaneously bawl like a baby and praise the beauty of humankind.
Quote #7
"She's been to the Minister, and he sent her to me with a note. She wants us to open the trout season early this year." (7.191)
Moira loves Dwight so much that she convinces the Prime Minister to open trout season early, since she knows that this will make Dwight happy. Seriously, Dwight—if you can't see that this girl's a keeper by now, then you need to get your eyes checked.
Quote #8
"I don't know what would have happened if you hadn't come along. I suppose half a loaf is better than no bread, when you're starving." (8.90)
In the end, this is why Moira never turns her back on Dwight, even after he makes it abundantly clear that nothing will happen between them. As she says elsewhere, she might have been able to bag him if she had enough time, but time is exactly what she lacks.
Quote #9
"I'll tell her that you turned what might have been a bad time for me into a good time. [...] I'll tell her that you've made it easy for me to stay faithful to her, and what it's cost you." (8.295)
For his part, Dwight isn't oblivious to Moira's feelings—he actually feels plenty toward her as well. But if there's one thing we know about the smooth Mr. Towers, it's that he always follows the rules, no matter what. In fact, we'd even argue that if Moira had convinced him to get jiggy with her, he would have become a different man from the one she fell in love with.
Quote #10
He drew her near to kiss her again, but she refused him. "No—go on now." In her mind she phrased the word, "Or I'll be the one that starts crying." (9.276)
On the one hand, this makes us cheer, because Moira is the one denying Dwight for once. You go, girl. On the other, though, it's also the biggest tearjerker of all time because it's the final moment these two almost-lovers will ever share. And now if you'll excuse us, we need to, uh, figure out who's cutting onions near our cubicle.
