Father Barry (Karl Malden)’s Timeline and Summary

Father Barry (Karl Malden)’s Timeline and Summary

  • After Joey's death, Edie tells Barry he's not involved enough in solving the community's problems. Barry feels ashamed and goes with her to see what's going on at the docks.
  • When he realizes that Johnny's gang killed Joey, he holds a meeting with some of the dockworkers to get them to testify against Johnny. But Johnny's gangsters break up the meeting.
  • Nevertheless, Barry convinces Kayo Dugan to testify. Unfortunately, Johnny's men find out and orchestrate Dugan's death.
  • At the docks, Barry gives his speech about the deaths of Dugan and Joey being versions of the Crucifixion. He urges the men to stand up—which pricks Terry's conscience even more.
  • Terry goes to Barry and confesses the truth about his role in Joey's death. Barry urges him to testify and to tell Edie the truth (he does both).
  • After Charley gets killed, Terry wants to seek revenge. Barry tries to talk him out of it, and testify instead.
  • Terry tells him to "go to hell" and Barry punches him. But, ultimately, Terry agrees.
  • After Terry testifies, Johnny's thugs beat him up. But Barry eggs Terry on, inspiring him to pick himself up, walk into work, and permanently discredit Johnny.
