Terry Malloy (Marlon Brando)’s Timeline and Summary

  • Terry helps lure Joey Doyle to his death, without realizing the gangsters are going to kill him. Oops. Now he feels sad.
  • He mopes about it, and runs into Joey's sister, realizing he likes her.
  • When Charley and Johnny make him spy on Father Barry and the dockworkers Barry's trying to turn against Johnny, Terry goes.
  • But he helps Edie escape the meeting when Johnny's henchmen attack, and then he lies and tells Johnny and Charley that nothing was happening at the meeting.
  • He falls in love with Edie, but Barry convinces him to tell Edie the truth about his role in Joey's death and finally to testify against Johnny.
  • After an emotional confrontation, Charley helps save Joey from Johnny's wrath. But Johnny kills Charley in retaliation.
  • Edie gets back together with Terry, who now wants to seek revenge for Charley's death. Barry convinces him to testify against Johnny in court instead of trying to kill him.
  • Terry testifies in court, openly accusing Johnny of the murder.
  • Johnny and his gangsters beat Terry to a bloody pulp, but they can't stop Terry from breaking their power. He walks onto the docks against Johnny's orders, and the rest of the workers follow him.
