Rita Williams-Garcia doesn't consider herself a poet. In fact, she freaked out at the prospect of having to write poetry for the book. Looks like she got over that fear, since poetry shows up in One Crazy Summer.

At first, Delphine was going to be the poet. After writing more of the book, though, Williams-Garcia didn't think Delphine would have time to write poetry or be that interested in it, though, so instead she chose Fern to be the mini-poet in the making.
