• Old Grace returns to the Ottawa Valley.
• The story flashes back to a young Grace during her summer spent as a waitress at Bailey's Falls.
• Maury asks Grace out on a date.
• Grace becomes involved with the Travers family. She's especially fond of Mrs. Travers.
• Thanksgiving Clam Massacre, during which Grace fatefully cuts her foot on a clamshell. (Remember—this is Canada, where Thanksgiving happens in early October.)
• Neil Travers takes Grace to the hospital. Their trip turns into a long, strange, and sad Sunday driving adventure. Grace drives back to Bailey's Falls. The next morning she hears that Neil died in a car crash.
• Mr. Travers visits Grace and gives her a check for one thousand dollars.
