  • 1469: Niccolò Machiavelli is born in Florence, Italy. The same year, Lorenzo 'Il Magnifico' de Medici comes to power.
  • 1492: Lorenzo 'Il Magnifico' de Medici dies and his incompetent son, Piero, takes over.
  • 1494: The Medici fall from power after the French invasion, and Florence is ruled by a republican government.
  • 1498: Machiavelli becomes a head of the second chancery and secretary of the Dieci di Libertà e Pace, which deals with foreign relations and war.
  • 1502: Machiavelli meets Cesare Borgia. Swoon!
  • 1503: Machiavelli starts training the Florentine militia.
  • 1509: The civilian army that Machiavelli had been training took Pisa, one-upping his idol Cesare.
  • 1512: The republic falls, the Medicis return to power, and Machiavelli is out of a job.
  • 1513: Machiavelli is arrested and lightly tortured. When he's released, he goes to his country home and starts writing The Prince.
  • 1515: He gives The Prince to Lorenzo de' Medici.
  • 1527: Niccolò Machiavelli dies. The same year, Rome is sacked by mercenary soldiers running amok. Machiavelli's ghost is not surprised.
  • 1532: The Prince is finally published.
