Monsieur de Rênal Timeline and Summary

  • Monsieur de Rênal decides that he wants a private tutor for his children. He has heard good things about a local peasant named Julien Sorel. After some brutal haggling with Julien's father, Monsieur hires Julien.
  • Julien comes to the house and things work out pretty well at first. Monsieur needs to scold Julien now and then for slacking. But for the most part, things seem good.
  • Things turn sour for Monsieur when he receives an anonymous letter saying that Julien is sleeping with his wife. Before Monsieur can act on this letter, his wife convinces him that the letter has come from Valenod, a rival of Monsieur de Rênal's who is trying to ruin Madame's name because she has refused his sexual advances in the past.
  • Monsieur de Rênal believes his wife, but ultimately decides that he must send Julien away in order to avoid scandal.
  • The next time we hear from Monsieur de Rênal, we learn that he has lost his position as mayor to his rival, Valenod. He forbids his wife from visiting Julien Sorel in prison, but his wife goes anyway.
