Sorel Timeline and Summary

  • Sorel sells his original sawmill land to the mayor, Monsieur de Rênal, for way more than it's worth. For weeks afterward, Sorel grins at Monsieur whenever he sees him, just to remind him that he got taken.
  • Monsieur de Rênal approaches Sorel one day and asks him whether his son Julien could work for him as a tutor.
  • Even thought Sorel won't see a penny of the money, he haggles hard with Monsieur. It's not because he loves his son, but because he loves to argue about money.
  • Sorel only shows up again at the end of the novel to yell at his son for ruining the Sorel family name. This is after Julien has shot a woman in church.
