Humphrey and Sam

Character Analysis

Humphrey and Sam are two of the local heath characters that we hear about in passing. They appear throughout the novel, usually with their fellow Egdon chorus members, and they both do work at Captain Vye and Mrs. Yeobright's houses. These characters help to demonstrate tradition and custom in a much more humorous light, as opposed to characters like Susan Nunsuch who reveal the dark side of backwards, country life.
