Book of Revelation Perseverance Quotes

How we cite our quotes: (Chapter:Verse)

Quote #1

I, John, your brother who share with you in Jesus the persecution and the kingdom and the patient endurance, was on the island called Patmos because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus. (NRSV 1:9)

I John, who also am your brother, and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle that is called Patmos, for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ. (KJV 1:9)

Right away, John is letting the reader know that he feels their pain.

Quote #2

Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Beware, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison so that you may be tested, and for ten days you will have affliction. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life. (NRSV 2:10)

Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life. (KJV 2:10)

This is part of one of the letters to the individual churches. Jesus wants them to know that trials are coming, but to stay strong. He's also very serious about the "faithful until death" part. No chickening out is allowed.

Quote #3

A great portent appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. She was pregnant and was crying out in birthpangs, in the agony of giving birth. (NRSV 12:1-2)

And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars: And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered. (KJV 12:1-2)

If the Woman is the Church, this image of her is a pretty great call to endurance. She's in a huge amount of pain, but she keeps going because she knows she's going to bring something beautiful and new and precious into the world.
