Daisy Timeline and Summary

  • You can’t blame Berenger for being in love with Daisy. As soon as she enters he starts acting all goofy and realizes what a bum he looks like. Seeing her makes him want to better himself. Must be a catch, right?
  • After the first rhino run, though, Daisy helps out along with the Old Man and others. And at that point Berenger can’t avoid seeing his co-worker/crush.
  • She gives no indication of having any real affection for Berenger at this point. Bummer.
  • When we see her the next day at work, she’s arguing with the obstinate Botard about the rhinos. She saw ‘em, but he still won’t believe they’re real.
  • When Berenger shows up late for work, she sneakily signs him in so he’ll be counted as on time. Not necessarily a sign of true love, but we do know that she at least has enough fondness for Berenger to help him out of a jam.
  • Now, we know that Berenger loves her, and we’ve heard from Berenger that his coworker Dudard might have feelings for Daisy too (and that she might have feelings for Dudard). And then we get a sense that Papillon, the boss, has a thing for her, too. “You keep your horny hands off my face, you old pachyderm!” she yells to swat down what looks like an advance (2.1.439). You might think that’d be a rhino advance, but nope, men can be pachydermish too. The point: Daisy’s a hot commodity. (Which might have to do with how she’s basically the only lady in the play.)
  • Once rhino-Boeuf shows up and the stairs collapse, Daisy calls the fire brigade for help, and then exits through the window with the rest.
  • Next time Daisy shows up it’s at Berenger’s apartment and the rhinos are well on the way to taking over. Dudard is already there. The rhinos are closing in. It’s freaky. But Daisy tries to maintain some sense of normalcy by proposing that they all have lunch. What a gal.
  • In the apartment, we come to realize that Daisy loves Berenger just like he loves her. It could be argued (and Berenger does argue it) that this love is what drives Dudard to turn into a rhinoceros. Heartbreak can really change a fella. Even into a rhino.
  • Daisy and Berenger exchange their feelings of love and then flame out quicker than a celebrity marriage. Yeah, we went there.
  • As she watches the rhinoceroses, Daisy clearly sees something in them that will lead her away from Berenger. Finally, she claims that they are like gods, leaves Berenger behind, and heads into the streets to join the others.
  • Feeling a bit low after that downer of a relationship? At least you’re not a rhinoceros. If you really need a pick-me-up to remember that romance can work out, at least every once in awhile, you need to listen to the immortal Huey Lewis classic “The Power of Love” from the even more classic Back to the Future.
  • And if you hate that, here’s a cute baby rhino cartoon. Aw, who could doubt love with a face like that?
