Jean Timeline and Summary

  • Jean shows up late for his meeting with Berenger at the Café, not because he is late to things but because he knows Berenger is always late. Ugh. That is so Jean.
  • Everybody loves a relaxing Sunday on an outdoor patio (mimosas, here we come!), but Jean sees it as a chance to lecture his good buddy Berenger. He tells Berenger to stop drinking so much, to dress the right way, to visit museums and the theater, and basically to be like him.
  • When the rhino shows up, Jean has a much stronger reaction than Berenger. He thinks it’s an outrage and that it should be taken up with town government types. Still right on track with the human way.
  • Jean’s been a bit high-n-mighty with Berenger all along, but he just doesn’t get that Berenger seems chill with the fact that, you know, a rhinoceros just stormed by. Their argument escalates and Berenger storms off himself.
  • The next time we see Jean, he’s in bed. Fever, headache, you know. Despite that, he prohibits Berenger from calling a doctor. Shouldn’t a good upstanding citizen like Jean want a checkup? But then, he starts spouting about how he’s never felt better in his life.
  • Next step: the skin starts going green and takes on the texture of (take a wild guess) a rhinoceros.
  • Before you know it, Jean is storming around the apartment threatening to trample Berenger or any person that gets in his way. He’s also uttering sounds like “brrr!” instead of human words. You don’t even want to know what “brrr!” means in rhinoceros.
  • The writing is on the wall, people. Jean won’t be bossing people about how to dress for much longer.
  • Finally, he rushes out of the apartment to join the other rhinoceroses. Bye bye, Berenger.
