Sabriel Chapter 10 Summary

  • Sabriel casts a spell to raise the river, and the bridge and the Mordicant's servants are washed away in the flood.
  • The house's sendings have prepared travel supplies for her, and Mogget urges her to leave pronto. Since the river is flooded though, Sabriel can't leave the way she came—so Mogget directs Sabriel to escape using something called a Paperwing, which was created by a previous Abhorsen. She's still lacking a map, so Mogget says he'll come with her, but first he sketches her a rough drawing of the Old Kingdom. If only all cats were this helpful.
  • The sendings dress Sabriel in traditional Abhorsen garb, including armor and a blue surcoat embroidered with tiny silver keys.
  • Mogget gives Sabriel a small silver ring, saying, "You'll need this if I'm to come with you" (10.44)—he's frustratingly cryptic about its purpose, but tells Sabriel she'll know when she needs to use it. When she tries it on, she can tell it's a Free Magic object—magic not governed by the Charter.
