Frederick's biggest rival teaches our guy the ways of social wiliness and infidelity. He initiates Frederick into the crazy party world of courtesans, and the two men even end up sharing a lover—almost two. And as it goes, the student eventually surpasses the teacher, as Frederick rises in the ranks and Arnoux slowly hits rock bottom.
