Byron is known for transgressing the conventional moral codes of his day. After a scandalous separation from his wife, Annabella, Byron left England to live in continental Europe, in order to escape the nasty gossip at home in London. Most of the gossip was probably true, of course – before his marriage (and probably during it), Byron had had a series of affairs with both women and men, and possibly even an incestuous affair with his slightly older half-sister, August Leigh.
