  • After learning that his former teacher Father Ferreira apostatized while in Japan, Father Rodrigues and Father Garrpe decide to visit the country.
  • The priests head to Macau, where they meet a Japanese man named Kichijiro. Kichijiro helps them make it to Japan.
  • The priests meet some local Christians and become a part of the community.
  • The government learns of the priests' presence and executes several villagers in retaliation. Kichijiro manages to escape by renouncing his faith.
  • The two priests split up to evade capture.
  • While wandering, Rodrigues finds Kichijiro, who promises to lead him to more Christians. Instead, he hands the priest over to the authorities
  • After being locked in a cell for some time, Rodrigues is brought to the seaside, where he finds Garrpe captured as well. Garrpe dies after refusing to renounce his faith.
  • Afterwards, Rodrigues meets Inoue, the brutal magistrate of Nagasaki, and Ferreira, who became a Japanese citizen after renouncing the faith.
  • Rodrigues too renounces Christianity after realizing that it's the only way to protect the Japanese Christians.
