Character Role Analysis

Kathy Selden

Lina may insist that she and Don are engaged because that's what the fan magazines say, but it's clear that Don only has eyes for Kathy. He spends the first act of the movie chasing her, the second act of the movie falling in love—nay, lurve—with her, and the third act teaming up with her to take down their common enemy: Lina.

What's extra-cool about their relationship, especially given the time period in which the story takes place, is that Don and Kathy are equals. Think about it: How does Don win Kathy back in the end? By showing her—and, really, everybody—that her career is just as important as his. (The whole singing a love song to her in front of a couple hundred people while decked out in a tux probably didn't hurt, either, but you get our drift.)
