Rheya isn't so much a romantic interest as a romance already lost. She's also Kelvin's memory, which means his romance is with himself. That's why their relationship seems a little perfunctory, or "stylized" and "reduced to certain characteristic expressions, gestures, and movements" (5.73). There's only so much going on inside your own head, after all.
