David St. Hubbins (Michael McKean)’s Timeline and Summary

  • As one of two lead guitarists of Spinal Tap, David has agreed to be interviewed by filmmaker Marty DiBergi, along with the rest of the band. He and Nigel talk about the good old days, which also featured some pretty interesting hairdos.
  • David hangs out with his partners in crime at an opening night party. Little does he know it will be Tap's last U.S. opening night party. Not to sound ominous or anything.
  • David, who appears to be the lead vocalist, performs "Big Bottom" at their Philly gig. We'd be shocked if he doesn't like big bottoms in real life, because he is really selling it.
  • As the band manager, Ian, breaks it to the band that one of their gigs has been canceled, David reacts calmly, but seems none too pleased. So yeah…now you know what his "none too pleased" face looks like.
  • Back in conversation with Marty, David and Nigel sing a few bars of their first song. It comes back to them after a few seconds. Really, it's like riding a bike. If that bike is missing the handlebars and veering wildly off course.
  • When the band discovers that rabid fans are no longer rabid for them, choosing instead to mob one of their biggest professional rivals, David takes it better than Nigel, but only barely. He seems more peeved with Ian, who appears to be on his last nerve.
  • David chats with Jeanine, his girlfriend, and is delighted to learn she's going to be joining up with them when they come through Milwaukee. He's oblivious to Nigel's pronounced sneering.
  • Jeanine shows up during a mic test at their Milwaukee stop, and David is ecstatic. Probably because he now has someone he can talk to who has matching hair.
  • David and Jeanine talk to Marty about the influence Jeanine has always exerted over David's musical choices, as well as every other aspect of his life. Sounds like a healthy relationship.
  • At a restaurant, the band brainstorms what they can do to turn things around. Jeanine has some ideas which David just loves. Sorry if that shocked anyone.
  • After yet another foul-up courtesy of Ian, David loses it. He insists that Jeanine would do a much better job managing the band. So…Ian, out; Jeanine, in.
  • David then gets into it with Nigel, who isn't keen on the change in leadership. It's like watching Bert and Ernie fight. Sad, really.
  • While performing Sex Farm Woman at an Air Force Base, Nigel quits the band, and David lets him go. He acts like it isn't a big deal when he talks to Marty about it, but we can tell he's hurtin'.
  • The band tries to go on with Nigel, but their amusement park gig doesn't go so well. Hardly anyone shows up, and they sound pretty bad. Like…worse than usual.
  • Fortunately, Nigel returns on the night of their final tour performance, and after a bit of resistance, David welcomes him back into the band. Jeanine doesn't look thrilled with the development, but maybe David can appease her by buying her another choke collar.
  • David, Nigel and Derek are tearing it up in Japan. Probably best if most of their audience can't understand the words.
